Photo Series Austrian Cultural Forum London, 2016

Manuela Mark’s view of the institution employs photography as its medium, and presents a visual reflection of the location. Her focus lies both on the inside and outside, thus placing the ACF within an urban context and also exploring and identifying the inner essence of the institution and building, with all its quirks and architectonic peculiarities. At the same time, the photographs avoid becoming simply documentary due to their formal self-determination.

Photo Series Krumau, 2015

This series of photos is based on exploring correlations between built and grown structures and how they are influenced by each other. Topographic conditions, requirements for settlement, the use of divers layers of (building-) materials and the effort in maintaining an image of a grown and well preserved city, architecture and landscape for commercial use are in the main focus.

Photo Series Tokyo, 2011

This series of photos was taken during a six-month stay in Tokyo exploring the specific aesthetic of gaps, the space in between two houses by following and playing with traditional Japanese aesthetic principles. Aspects like imperfection and insufficiency, irregularity, asymmetry, simplicity, weathering, intersections of interiors and exteriors and the specific use of shadow and light influenced the western image of Japan and still want to be confirmed in art.

Photo Series Mackey Apartment House LA, 2008

The objective of breaking boundaries between inside and outside raises questions of identity concerning the self, the other, the body and its absence, thus enabling an interpretation of the relationships between individual, apartment, house, body and mass.

Space, body, motion, materiality, structure and their relationship to each other are negotiated in a subtle and yet disconcerting manner. Inside and outside, corporeality and materiality are intertwined, thus challenging their perception. The sculpture-like draperies of different fabric patterns and qualities in the series of photographs leave it unclear whether and how they contain a body.
